This is one of my favorite paintings currently on display in the wonderful exhibition The Angel of the Odd at Musée d’Orsay. It expresses the shadows behind the light of pure rationality. This contrast was a central principle of the romantic/symbolist aesthetic.
It’s definitely my period!
